Phuket, Thailand – A devastating landslide in the Muang area of Phuket has resulted in the tragic deaths of eight individuals, including two Russian nationals and three Myanmar nationals. The incident occurred following two days of relentless heavy rainfall, which triggered the landslide early this morning.
The landslide struck the historical and cultural centre of Phuket, causing significant damage to the area. Among the deceased are a Russian man and woman, as well as three citizens from Myanmar. The disaster has also left more than 250 houses damaged, and the search for missing persons continues as rescue teams work tirelessly to locate survivors.
Local authorities have set up an incident command centre to coordinate rescue operations and assist those affected. The continuous heavy rainfall, measuring up to 200 millimetres, has exacerbated the situation, making rescue efforts challenging.
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) and the Phuket Governor to provide immediate support to the victims and their families. Efforts are being made to inform residents and tourists about the ongoing risks and to advise them to avoid high-risk areas.
