Kathmandu – Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known as Prachanda, the Chairman of the Maoist Centre and former Prime Minister of Nepal, has stated that countries like Nepal suffer the consequences of mistakes they did not commit.
Chairman Prachanda referred to the recent disaster in Thame, Ward No. 5 of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu, where a glacial lake burst, causing significant loss of life and property. He emphasized that this tragedy results from Nepal facing the consequences of climate change, for which it is not responsible.
In a statement released on social media on Saturday, Prachanda expressed concern over the negative impacts of climate change, which are increasingly putting the lives of people in mountainous countries at multi-dimensional risk. “Glaciers are melting, glacial lakes are bursting, and natural disasters like floods and landslides are causing massive destruction in coastal areas. I have raised the issue of climate justice from the United Nations General Assembly to COP 28. Countries like Nepal are suffering for mistakes we did not make,” he said.
Referring to the recent glacial lake burst in Khumbu Pasanglhamu, Prachanda highlighted the significant loss of life and property and the resulting human risk in the affected areas.
He also urged the Nepal government to ensure there is no lack of rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas. Additionally, he appealed to the global community to enhance international cooperation to protect Nepal from the risks posed by climate change.
